5 signs you’re dealing with a bad recruiter

There are a ton of great recruiters out there, but like any other industry, there are some bad apples as well. Here are a few signs that you’re working with a bad recruiter

Push you to accept any offer

People who have your best interest in mind, wouldn’t place you in a position where they know you won’t be a good fit. A bad recruiter will push you to accept any offer. They will practically demand that you accept the first offer or the one with the biggest fee!

They’re unreliable

They say they’re going to call you back but you never hear from them again. You call them but they’re impossible to get hold of… Sometimes recruiters will be waiting for an update from hiring managers or a client so they may not be able to get back to you until they have all the information. But if you spot a pattern of unreliability then that is not a good sign!

They don’t listen to what you want

They keep contacting you about irrelevant roles that don’t meet your skills or expertise. This is a big problem. It shows they don’t understand your background because they assume that you’ve got skills in one area of the industry so you must be qualified for roles across the whole industry. This could either be because they’re new to recruitment or they’re just being lazy.

They don’t give you any feedback

It can be difficult for recruiters to follow up with every candidate. But it’s always good practice to contact candidates after an interview and provide them with feedback.

They can’t answer basic questions

They should be able to answer basic vague questions such as job responsibilities, whether you’d be working overtime or on weekends or even how many people are at the company.

The best way to avoid dealing with a bad recruiter is to find an agency that specialises in your industry and who genuinely care about their candidates.
